The oldest, family-owned, bridal shop in the South celebrates its 40th birthday on Friday 30 September 2016.

It’s survived three recessions and been around for five royal weddings.

Brides of Southampton was started in 1976 by Shirley Jory after she left the bright, bridal lights of London and used her twenty years of experience to start her own bridal business.
The shop opened on Portswood Road in Southampton and is still there.

The business became so successful that Shirley was soon joined by her husband in 1980.

Their daughter joined the family business in 1991, having literally grown up in the shop. Today that daughter, Shelley Jory-Leigh, is a well-known successful power boat racer and charity fund raiser but still retains her passion and management of the business.

Racing to 40 years

Powerboat Champion Shelley Jory-Leigh has notched up another success - this time in her day job...

Shelley runs the family business, Brides of Southampton, which this year is celebrating its 40th anniversary. This makes it the oldest family-owned Bridal shop in Britain.

It’s survived three recessions and been around for five royal weddings.

Shelley joined her parents, John and Shirley, to mark the day. Brides from across the decades joined them, some in their original wedding dresses. Dress designers and suppliers added their congratulations.

A high point of the celebrations was the arrival of a coach and horses, carrying five of the brides. This recreated the shop’s opening ceremony in 1976.

Shelley recalls how she started in the business..
